Café Tacuba Works Double Duty for Chicago
By Randy J. Klodz
Mexican band Café Tacuba will bring its grooving tunes to Chicago for two very special shows. Not only will this be Café Tacuba’s only stops in Chicago on this short tour, but half of the tour is spent here in Chicago.
Café Tacuba—Rita Cantalagua (vocals), Emmanuel Del Real (keyboards, programming and percussions), Joselo Rangel (guitars) and Quique Rangel (basses)—will play the House of Blues for two of the four U.S. dates on the tour, on Nov. 26 and Nov. 27, in support of their latest E.P., a collection of covers, originally by Los Tres, called “Vale Callampa.” The other dates on the tour include single stops in New York and Los Angeles. With half the U.S. dates in Chicago, one would assume Café Tacuba enjoy playing here.
“In Chicago there are a lot of Latino-Americans and Mexicans and they always come out and share with us,” said bassist Quique Rangel. “So when we tour in the U.S. they always ask us for one or two big shows in Chicago and we are very glad that that’s what going to happen in Chicago this time.”
In support of “Vale Callampa” the band has created a music video for “Dejate Caer” and also performed “Olar a Gas” during the taping of the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America, with the singer from Los Tres. The members of Café Tacuba are currently working on an as-yet untitled new album.
Though Café Tacuba’s sound stems from cultural melodies, Rangel said that he’s also personally influenced by many American bands including The Flaming Lips, Beck, R.E.M., Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
The House of Blues is located at 329 N. Dearborn St., in Chicago. Tickets
for each of the two 9 p.m. shows are $30 each and attendees must be 18 or
older.
