Kinky Put on the “Atlas” with Latin Grammy
Nom, Tour with Ozomatli

Kinky might sound like something attached to the latest string of celebrity
home videos, but it is also indeed the name of Latin Grammy nominees Kinky.
The Monterrey, Mexico natives will warming the stage for Ozomatli for an Aug.
28 show at House of Blues.
Kinky--which includes Gilberto Cerezo (vocals), Carlos Chairez (guitar), Cesar
Pliego (bass), Omar Gongora (drums) and Ulises Lozano (keyboard)--released the
critically acclaimed “Atlas” in December, which features the band’s
clever blend of Latin grooves, light rock and electronic dance beats.
Though the band says its creative blend of musical sounds and blending of English
and Spanish lyrics isn’t a marketing technique, the sound is uniquely
catching, and is bred from the Spanish/English influence of the band’s
homeland of Monterrey, Mexico.
“It comes naturally spending a lot of time living in the States, and the
clashing of cultures-- what comes to our heads is what comes out,” said
Ulises Lozano, Kinky’s keyboardist, that upon live jam sessions, also
mans an accordion.
With Kinky joining this national tour with Ozomatli, a tour package the bands
have been attempting to put together for quite some time now, the band is sure
to add more fans to its already steady fan base. Both Kinky and Ozomatli are
nominated for awards for this year’s Latin Grammy Awards, which take place
on Sept. 1. In fact, both bands are nominated for the Best Alternative Album
category, so with the tour should feature some friendly competition among the
two bands.
“We knew [the members of Ozomatli] for a long time, we are very good friends,
so it’s going to be a very fun, friendly tour and also our fans are very
excited about the Grammy nomination,” Lozano said.
“Atlas” tracks such as “The Headphonist,” “Airport
Feelings,” “Presidente” and “My God is So Quiet”
glisten with light-rock rhythms, dancing beats and Spanglish lyrics. “Do
U Like It” starts as a psychodelic rock anthem that turns into a track
that could be heard at any of today’s dance clubs.
House of Blues is at 329 N. Dearborn St. Del Castillo is also schedule to perform.
