Sixpence Play ‘Sabrina,’ Set Tour
By Randy J. Klodz
The driving force behind mid-90s hits “Kiss Me” and “There
She Goes” have churned out a new batch of radio-friendly quiet rock songs
and have begun their first major tour in nearly five years. Sixpence None the
Richer will be making one Chicago stop on the current tour on Feb. 15 at the
House of Blues.
But before beginning the current tour in support of the October release “Divine
Discontent,” Sixpence lead singer Leigh Nash made her acting debut on
the set of WB’s “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” with a cameo
appearance on the show. “I actually had a couple of lines, so I’m
really hoping that nobody watches it,” Nash joked, “not for the
show’s sake, but for my sake.”
It was fun, but I was pretty frazzled by it and I think I should have just said,
‘No, I don’t want to do that,’ but I thought ‘Well,
what the heck, it might be fun,’” she said. “But I don’t
ever want to see it.” Her band also performed “Don’t Dream
It’s Over” and “Breathe Your Name” which may also appear
on the future “Sabrina” episode.
Sixpence, which now includes-- Nash (vocals), Matt Slocum and Sean Kelly (guitars),
Justin Cary (bass), Jerry Dale McFadden (keyboards), Dale Baker (percussion)
and Mitchell (drums)--will be playing a set comprised of mostly songs from “Divine
Discontent” and will, as Nash says, “definitely visit the crowd
pleasers,” those being “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes.”
“Divine Discontent” features 13 tracks, all of which could find
a home on soft rock radio. No track on the album sticks out as much as “Don’t
Dream It’s Over,” a superb cover of the Crowded House song. Already
previously recording a successful cover hit with “There She Goes,”
Nash and her band were apprehensive about recording another cover song. “We
certainly did not intend to put another cover on a record,” Nash said.
“We don’t wont to be known as this cover band.”
However, the record label recommendation grew on the band. “We definitely
had a really soft spot for Crowded House and [we] love that song so we were
definitely excited to go in and record it,” Nash said.
The House of Blues is at 329 N. Dearborn St., in Chicago. Tickets for this all-ages
7 p.m. show are listed for $16 each. Luce is scheduled to open the show. This
tour is set to end on Feb. 20 at The Bottom Line in New York City. More information
